PURE ESSENTIAL OILS

Organic and Not Organic

Pure Essential Oils

are highly concentrated extracts derived from plants. These oils are obtained through methods like steam distillation, cold pressing, or solvent extraction, ensuring they remain free from additives, synthetic chemicals, or dilution.

However, because it says Pure Essential Oil on the bottle label does not mean that it is. You must find a supplier that you can trust.

Each type of essential oil has unique properties. For example, lavender is known for its calming effects, while peppermint is often used to boost energy. However Spike Lavender is nothing like a good quality Lavender grown at High Altitudes. You ideally need to understand what is in theory inside your bottle.

There are some essential oils that are recommended NOT to be used, you can, however find them for sale from some suppliers. I would suggest that you do not use them or buy them from those suppliers.

Below I will list and describe the main oils (the list will grow over time)

Organic

Organic essential oils are derived from plants grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers. These oils are extracted using methods that preserve their purity and ensure they remain free from harmful chemicals. Certified organic essential oils often meet strict standards, such as those set by the Soil Association in the UK, to guarantee their quality and environmental sustainability. Because of the extra workload and costs in organic farming Organic Essential Oils tend to be more expensive.

At the core of Aromatherapy are Pure Essential Oils. Every aromatherapy recipe has one or more pure essential oils in it. The therapeutic quality of those oils makes all the difference to the eventual outcome.

There is a popular misconception that emmenagogic essential oils are unsafe during pregnancy because they are abortifacient and therefore may lead to a miscarriage. This assumption is incorrect and is corrected in ‘Essential Oil Safety’*, where Robert Tisserand clarifies that emmenagogic oils present no danger in aromatherapy, and clary sage is confirmed as safe (when used externally) during pregnancy.

This misunderstanding has been exacerbated due to Salvia sclarea being confused with Salvia lavandulifolia– which is an abortifacient oil.

Possible Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Preventer

Research published in 2010 demonstrates geranium oil’s impressive anti-neuroinflammatory effects. When it comes to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, the activation of microglial cells (primary immune cells in the brain) and their subsequent release of pro-inflammatory factors including nitric oxide (NO) play a major part in the development and progression of these diseases.

Overall, this study concludes that “geranium oil might be beneficial in the prevention/treatment of neurodegenerative diseases where neuroinflammation is part of the pathophysiology.” (10)

Relaxing, Soothing and Restoring

Lavender Essential oil has many uses and is one of the most popular and well known essential oils. There is a wealth of information available about lavender oil and many books have been written on the subject. Lavender HA is great for children, always carry a bottle around with you for little emergencies especially when on holiday. It may also relieve pain and itching, as well as speeding up the healing process.

(I have seen evidence of this: in the late 90’s we used to sell in Uxbridge at a regular craft market. Over a few months nurses from Uxbridge Hospital were coming to me regularly to buy our French HA Lavender. Eventually, I asked them why … “We are using it with ladies who have had breast surgery, they seem to be healing much quicker and with less scar tissue”)

(In my 50’s I caught Chickenpox. I was very ill. However as soon as possible my wife got me out of bed and made me bath in Lavender and Tea tree. I did not get one spot scar, it also eased the discomfort.)

Most importantly you should realise this key thing:-

  • not all Lavender oils are the same, in many ways.

  • The Oil may be distilled from a different plant variety

  • The plant may be grown in a different location and in a different climate.

  • After distillation the resulting oil may be adulterated.

  • The oil may be a blend of different Lavenders (not from one single crop)

All of these aspects will change the nature and therapeutic properties of your oil, not to mention the price.

For example the ‘quality’ of a lavandin oil will be totally different from a High Altitude oil. the Lavandin oil may smell more like Rosemary or Eucalyptus because of the high camphor content. These oils will be stimulating (not relax you) and may have very little benefit on a skin rash or scar. Some suppliers do not tell you the source of their oil, perhaps for their own reasons or just plain ignorance. Therefore you will notice huge differences in the price paid for any pure essential oil. Do some research and notice that there are a group of reputable companies who’s prices for a product are fairly similar.

In skin care, Rosemary Essential Oil strengthens the capillaries and works to regulate excessive oiliness, whilst its antibacterial properties help cleanse pimples.

Always a good choice for muscular and joint problems.

Do not ingest Tea Tree , especially if you are unsure of the source. I have used it against mouth ulcers, diluted in water as a mouthwash wash but spit it out after. The taste is not pleasant.
